| Talked with Moose at 9pm tonight and he had no rain today so we are a go for tomorrow. If he gets a lot of rain later he will let me know and I will post it here, so check in the morning. Otherwise - see you tomorrow! |

|
|
| Looked at XC Skies and it looks to be mostly cloudy tomorrow morning, becoming about 50% by 2pm. By 11am there should be thermals to about 9,000ft, rising to 12,000ft by 2pm. Thermals should be 500+ ft/min. There is a slight chance of rain. Winds appear to start light, going east by noon and SE in the afternoon. We will have to be wary of thunderstorms again tomorrow, but right now everything is a go! |

JT did several tandems. Grant and BJ soloed on the big Falcon. BJ and I were able to go for the first XC flights out of Moose's field, in addition to foot launching. We landed within a mile of each other a few miles north of Strasberg. Cloudbase was low, we never made 9,000ft but it was still great fun! My flight distance was 28.7 miles from where I pinned off in only 45 minutes of flight time. Fun to talk with the guys at Lookout now that I have a radio that has DCS.
The sky looked threatening and BJ and I flew away from the OD into the blue that finally put us down, but bu the time Fred drove us back to the airfield, everything had cleared and the wind was about 10mph out of the SSW. We are still learning about flying out there! The wind never did get as strong as forcasted and the lift was pleasant. |

Great to hear about the XC flights from the field.
I used to fly my Tiger and Experimental airplane in that general area quite a lot. You need to be aware of some air traffic corridors where I've found some pilots are getting ready for landings and not watching for other planes. Many business jets, charter planes and GA planes will be coming from due East of Centennial or Front Range airports at or around 8,000 ft. Just a few miles North of the field, that is the DEN airspace ceiling until you get to those airports, so lots of planes fly just under that, heading directly to Centennial. Unfortunately they are probably also switching radios about that time and briefing airport info so they may not be watching for traffic. So if you are a bit North of the field keep watching for fast traffic around that altitude. Also, lots of GA traffic flies at 7,000 ft on the South side of I-70 by Bennet, Strasburg or Byers. That is a pretty high GA traffic area and also where student pilots tend to be vectored for instrument approach practice at FTG. _________________ jj ... U2 -160 Falcon3-195 |

Glad you guys had good flights. I could have rallied down this morning but choose to bank a few more hours of sleep for my evening schedule.
I climbed out just west of Moose's around 3:00pm (above the small ridge to the west) crossing abeam Moose's at about 14,000 feet. We were above cloudbase, but the clouds looked inviting none the less. The monster cell to the east looked more ominous, but it was pretty far away.
I'll make it down there one of these days. Can't wait till this summer is over and I can get out and fly more... _________________ Life on the Lee-Side BLOG
