GoFly $2M competition for a Personal Flying Device

Postby jj » Wed Nov 22, 2017 5:07 pm

Boeing is sponsoring a contest for people to design personal flying devices that anyone can use to fly 20 miles to and from anywhere (well, sort of).

Design and build a safe, quiet, ultra-compact, near-VTOL personal flying device capable of flying 20 miles while carrying a single person.

It isn't free flight, but it could be fun flight. Seems to me an electric ultralight could fit the bill if you enabled it to use stabilization technology as used in quadcopters and new trainer RC airplanes. The "near-VTOL" requirement is the sticky bit.

I think this might be the trickier bit: " It should be a device for ALL: young and old, city-dweller and country-dweller, expert and novice."

I love the sound of battens in the morning.
