New Meteorological Display

Postby HangDiver » Thu Dec 01, 2016 9:40 am

Here's a nice visual display of basic weather parameters. Its based largely on the Global Forecast System (GFS) but is augmented by other models. Its not going to tell you if its going to be soarable or not. Still, a nice GUI for quick weather visualization. Set the date and time on the lower part of the screen to start. https://www.ventusky.com/?p=39.37;-104. ... ure&w=fast

Thanks for finding, and sharing! The more of these animations we dive into, the better we become at in-situ visualizing. An interesting position is to look at them from an airmass motion convergence/divergence perspective.

Unlike other similar visualizations that show just surface data, I like that you can QUICKLY look at weather data at various altitudes. For example, click on the temperature icon on the left side of the display, then click on the altitude icon just below. 700mb generally corresponds to 9,500ft - 10,000ft. 500mb generally corresponds to 16,500ft to 17,500ft.

It wouldn't be difficult to write software that generates skew-t soundings at each grid point but you'd need access to the gridded data.

Cool Rich
Another nice model looks a lot like Windyty but like the interface a little better. Now if they would just include the NAM 5K in the modeling and maybe the HRRR that would be great. Know I ask for a lot but why not.
