I suggest that we set up a few simple rules:

1. All flights have to include a launch or a landing in Colorado.
2. Only every pilot's best 4 flights count (this levels the playing field for pilots who don't have as much time as others.)

I really like the idea of a more experienced pilot (longest flight farther than let's say 30miles) partnering with a less experienced pilot (30mi from Lookout is just short of Lyons or Castle Rock). It would encourage us to motivate/coach each other on good XC days. It would also level the field in terms of glider category. No arbitrary handicap would be necessary.

What do you guys think?

Launch and Landing

Postby Mark Windsheimer » Fri Mar 04, 2011 1:17 pm

Just a thought

I agree with Loopy all flights should have a launch in Colorado, but I think you shouldn't limit the landing to Colorado.

Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas, and Utah are not that far away from launches in Colorado. Yet could yield some long flights. You would hate to cut the flight short just to win the contest.

Also other thoughts could be triangles and declared goals. If you want to limit flights to just Colorado.

Examples of long ones could be:

Lookout to Wyoming.
Villa to New Mexico
Ottos to some place in Utha
Boulder to Nebraska
Boulder to Kansas
Mooses to Kansas
Mooses to New Mexico
Steamboat to Wyoming or even Nebraska

Hi Mark!

I agree with Loopy all flights should have a launch in Colorado, but I think you shouldn't limit the landing to Colorado.

That is why I said
All flights have to include a launch or a landing in Colorado

I could also think of some flights that could originate in places like Dinosaur and terminate somewhere in Colorado. This should count as well.

Well so far it looks like the usual suspects....

Come on newcomers! I am sure there are a few of you out there that have been dreaming of some day flying past Boulder or Roxborough. This can be your year!

Partner up with one of the old dogs and push your XC limits!

I'm in, but don't know where I fit in the food chain. I'm an old dog, but haven't ever done any XC. Do I pair up with one of your hotshots, or handicap one of the new guys?

I say lets not make it very complicated with a bunch of rules. We can have a couple of classes and keep it simple. We should focus on improving our piloting skills and catching up with Loopy(in this case) than pulling him down to our level with some weird rules. Plus weather is waaaaay more important than wing performance for XC flights. We are not racing. An EN B might be a slower wing but can fly further than a comp wing on a nice day as long as pilot makes good decisions!

The goal is not winning this contest. Its all about motivating pilots to have long, good flights, and have some fun at the rewards party.

We can have some classes to increase the competitiveness and give out more trophies.

For PG
1. Open Class (EN D + Comp+anybody who has a lower rated wing but wants to be in this class as well as serial class)
2. Serial Class (EN A+B+C)
For HG
I do not know about hanggliders. With more HG participants we can have a HG class if not they are welcome to join PG Open class

Leonardo takes best 6 flights of the pilots to make the list. Following picture is alltime Turkish Leonardo XC League results. We will have something like this.
FYI 1st guy flies a Niviuk Peak, 2nd guy Boom6-7, 3rd MantraM2, 4th MantraM3, 5th Mustang (EnC). There are pilots who fly R10,IP3, Boom7 at the bottom of the list. 2nd guy is the Turkish Champion, 1st guy is not even in top 10. This proves XC is completely different than racing comps. An EN C wing already has a chance to win our event why would we make even more rules for it.
