Boulder Open Space Site Use After the Locust Street Fire By Jenn Beach, President RMHGA
BOULDER OPEN SPACE MEETING RESULTS
The short and the long of it…
The North Boulder burn area is closed until further notice. We will assess in the springtime whether or not the site will open for summer 2003 flying. With the drought it may take more than one year for the vegetation to return well enough for that area to open again to the public.
Dakota Ridge is REOPENED. Yeah!! First, I want to thank every one of the conscientious pilots that complied with the temporary closure. You made a good impression with the Boulder Open Space personnel and they appreciated our demonstration of cooperation and compliance with their requests. Here are the general rules for launching and landing on Dakota Ridge. We'll get more detailed instructions out very soon; they'll be complete with pictures.
The available Dakota Ridge launches are primarily the ones where you take off right from, or as close to, the main trail as possible. The launch area up by the wind streamer has shown some very recent trampling/impact in a 30' x 50' area and BOS would like us to work with them on this launch. First, diversify your approach to that launch. Try not to use the same path twice or to simply follow the person in front of you. We do not want to create what is known as a social trail as that will clearly demonstrate to BOS that we DO impact the space and we will risk losing that launch area. Second, please set up in the same area all of the time. The 30x50 area needs to be more like 30x30 if we're going to keep the launch. The reasoning for this is that there is a rare grass that only grows on the ridge and needs to be protected. You can recognize it this time of the year as it is tall and has started to turn a reddish color (exact name and a picture will be provided with later details). The LZ for Dakota may be different for some of you. The short mesa just to the south of the main trail as you're going in from the parking area/trail head is the LZ. Please DO NOT land in the Prairie Dog Town on the south side of the trail. This is a protected commu
